Benchmark H.A.R.R.P.

Client: Benchmark Senior Living, LLC
Industry: Residential Care, Senior Living Services
Services: Scriptwriting, Video Production, Training Development

It’s a surprising fact that workers in nursing and residential care settings experience injuries at a rate twice that of workers in all other industries – even manufacturing and construction. These injuries take many forms, the most common of which involve musculoskeletal damage, often involving the back. It’s estimated that back injuries alone cost US employers more than a billion dollars in worker’s compensation each week, not to mention lost productivity, fines, and legal costs.

As a leading provider of senior living services, Benchmark Senior Living employs hundreds of associates who provide around-the-clock care to the residents of over 50 communities located throughout the New England area. Given the injury rates in this industry, the senior executive team at Benchmark understands that protecting the health of their company means protecting the health of their employees.

We developed the Benchmark H.ealth A.wareness and R.isk R.eduction P.rogram (H.A.R.R.P.) to provide associates with practical tools for enhancing the safety of their communities every day. To help associates confront the real health and safety risks that they face on the job, the lesson also incorporates compelling testimonial from an injured caregiver. Techniques are provided for improving one’s situational awareness of workplace hazards, a commitment that comes vividly to life as learners are challenged to identify staged hazards hidden in typical senior living community scenes. Relatable photos, videos, interactions, and hand-drawn illustrations featuring actual Benchmark associates and situations equip trainees with safe attitudes and behaviors as they’re welcomed into Benchmark’s proactive culture of safety.

The footage and photographs for the lesson were captured over the course of two full days at the beautiful Village at Willow Crossings senior living community in Mansfield, MA. The completed presentation was deployed on Benchmark’s learning management system, Benchmark University. It’s been enthusiastically received throughout the company, prompting discussion and action by associates at every level. 𝓢
